Jerry Lopez, 39, a driver for a medical company, was on his way to work early Wednesday morning when he was shot dead after his white van was carjacked in the southwest valley, authorities said.

The suspect, who has not been named and only described by police as in his 30s, was involved in multiple carjackings after a fight with his parents where he also shot dead his mother.

He was shot dead in a shootout with cops, officials said.

Lopez, whose children ranged in age between 3 and 11 years old, was recently promoted and celebrated his 13th year of being an American citizen.

Lopez's distraught wife, Karen Lopez, said that she collapsed when she learned the news of her husband of 13 years and said 'no... no... this isn't real'

Lopez's distraught wife, Karen Lopez  told Fox5 News Vegas that her husband had just left for work and was about four minutes up the street from their house, and most likely pulled over because he saw the police cars coming down the street.

'The guy just walked up shot my husband and threw him out of the vehicle ran him over and took our vehicle,' Karen said.

She said she went to look for her husband when he never showed up at work that is when she was told by officers that the the van her husband was driving was involved in the chase and shoot out the suspect had with police.

Karen said that her and her husband fostered eight of their children through the Clark County foster care system, and loved being a dad.

'He'd just come (home from work), throw his stuff down, not even change and just jump into the chaos of our day, roll around the floor, play with the kids,' she told 8News Now.

'All the kids would always scream, 'Daddy's home!' as soon as they heard the garage go up.'

She said when she had to share the heartbreaking news that daddy was gone she said their oldest child, who is 11, just 'kept texting' her husband's phone.

He said, 'Mommy, I know he's not going to answer, but I just want — hopefully he can still read them and I want him to know that I love him.'

And he said, 'I guess now I'm going to have to be a father for all of the babies,' ' Karen said.

A GoFundMe was created to help the family during this traumatic time. As of Friday afternoon more than $190,000 was raised towards their goal of $300,000.

She said her husband just found out that he was promoted and they went big for Christmas this year, and said, 'we were able to spoil the kids like we never have before'

At a news conference earlier this week, Metro Homicide Police Lt. Jason Johansson said 'this was not a random act, what happened here.'

'There is a direct family connection to that,' he said.

The first incident where the suspect's mother was killed happened near 7500 block of Placid where the road dips into a wash.

Johansson said 'the suspect was our suspect who was in the wash who is our shooter and that late last night he was at his family's residence which is in this area he knows very well.'

'When those gunshots went off his mother and father drove over here looking for their son and drove to the area of the wash,' he said. 'The son shot at them and struck his mother.

He said when officers cleared the wash they saw that the suspect's mother, police described in her 50s,' was dead.

Around 3:46 am on Wednesday morning, officers from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMP) were dispatched to an area near Placid Street and Maulding Avenue.

Officer were responding to reports of an illegal shooting that had been reported by multiple residents who heard gunshots, LVMP said in a news release.

When officers arrived they heard shots coming from an unknown direction.

As they searched the area they spotted a police car that was not occupied that was struck by gunfire.

Officers then saw a man enter the police vehicle and flee. Officers pursued the suspect who abandoned the car at 7300 block of South Durango Drive.

The suspect then carjacked a person at gunpoint and fled with his truck. As police continued the pursuit, the suspect then fled to the 8500 block of Blue Diamond Road where he abandoned the stolen truck.

After he exited the truck, police said he attempted to carjack another person in an SUV. When the suspect pointed a gun at the civilian, officers from the LVMPD discharged their weapons.

The suspect managed to get away and fled in the SUV.

As officers continued their pursuit, and suspect abandoned the SUV and carjacked a citizen in a van in the area of Durango Drive and Windmill Lane.

Officials said they witnessed the suspect remove the injured citizen from the van after hearing a gunshot.

Officers from LVMPD officers and Nevada State Police officers started shooting at the suspect’s vehicle as it was fleeing.

Emergency responders were called to the area where the man in the van was shot, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The man was later identified as Jerry Lopez.

The assailant still armed and driving the van around Durango and Agate Avenue. When SWAT and crisis negotiators arrived to the scene they saw the suspect had been injured.

When medical personnel arrived they confirmed the suspect was dead.

Officials said there were no officers injured in the shooting rampage.

According to the LMVPD, the is ninth officer-involved shooting of 2023. The identity of the officers involved will be released after 48 hours, as per the release.

A public information officer with the LMVPD told DailyMail.com on Friday that the Clark County Coroner’s Office will release the names of the deceased once next of kin have been notified.
