NEW YORK (AP) — Willie Mays, the iconic "Say Hey Kid" whose extraordinary talents and infectious passion endeared him to baseball fans worldwide, has passed away at the age of 93. His family and the San Francisco Giants announced his peaceful passing on Tuesday afternoon, surrounded by loved ones.

Mays, renowned for his dynamic play as a center fielder, was the oldest living Hall of Famer in baseball. His career spanned 22 seasons, predominantly with the New York and San Francisco Giants, where he left an indelible mark on the sport.

Among his numerous achievements, Mays boasted a lifetime batting average of .302, hammered 660 home runs, amassed 3,283 hits, crossed home plate over 2,000 times, and secured an impressive 12 Gold Glove Awards for his outstanding defensive prowess.

The pinnacle of Mays' career included winning the Rookie of the Year award in 1951, being named the league's Most Valuable Player twice, and consistently placing in the top 10 for MVP honors throughout his career.

Mays' legacy extends beyond statistics, as he became synonymous with the joy and excitement of baseball. His signature moments, such as his daring base-running and acrobatic catches — including the famous over-the-shoulder grab during the 1954 World Series — defined an era and captured the hearts of fans.

Baseball mourns the loss of one of its greatest ambassadors, a player whose impact transcended generations and whose spirit will forever be cherished in the annals of the game.

Willie Mays leaves behind a legacy that embodies the essence of baseball — skill, passion, and an enduring love for the sport that he shared with fans around the globe.
