Russian Missile Strike Devastates Kyiv Children’s Hospital, Killing Dozens in Ukraine

Ukrainian children’s hospital attacked as Russian strikes on cities kill at least 37

A Russian missile strike has partially destroyed a children's hospital in Kyiv, triggering a desperate scramble to rescue patients and staff amid fears that more people could be trapped under the rubble. The brazen daytime aerial assault across multiple Ukrainian cities during morning rush hour has resulted in at least 37 deaths and 170 injuries, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed.

The large-scale bombardment targeted several cities, including Kyiv, Dnipro, Kryvyi Rih, Slovyansk, and Kramatorsk. Among the dead are 27 people, including three children, in Kyiv, according to the Kyiv city military administration. The strike on Kyiv’s Okhmatdyt hospital, Ukraine’s largest children’s medical center, resulted in two deaths and at least 16 injuries.

Videos from Okhmatdyt hospital show volunteers, police, and security services working to sift through the rubble as smoke billowed from the building. Medical staff described the chaos as they tried to rush children to safety. Ukraine’s Health Minister Viktor Liashko stated that intensive care units, oncology departments, and surgery units were damaged. Over 600 patients were evacuated, with more than 100 transferred to other healthcare facilities.

Natalia Sardudinova, a senior nurse, described the moment of the strike, stating, “It was loud, the windows were crunching... Everything was in smoke, there was no air to breathe.” Several children were in operating theaters at the time, and procedures had to be quickly completed before relocating them to the basement shelter.

The attack on Okhmatdyt hospital has drawn widespread international condemnation. US President Joe Biden called the strikes a “horrific reminder of Russia’s brutality” and emphasized the need for continued global support for Ukraine. Biden announced plans to strengthen Ukraine’s air defenses to protect its cities and civilians from further Russian attacks.

The UN Security Council will hold a special meeting to discuss Russia’s attack on the children’s hospital, following a call for an emergency assembly by President Zelensky. The Ukrainian leader vowed retaliation and highlighted the urgent need for international support.

The missile strikes are part of a rare daylight bombardment of heavily populated areas far from the front lines, coming a day before a crucial NATO Summit in Washington. Russia’s defense ministry claimed that the strikes targeted “military industrial facilities of Ukraine and air bases of the Ukrainian armed forces” using long-range, high-precision weapons.

Ukraine’s air defense managed to shoot down 30 out of 38 missiles launched by Russia. Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov appealed for more air defense systems to support the country. Air raid sirens continued to ring out over Kyiv, with evacuated children being pushed to safety on stretchers. Volunteers brought much-needed supplies, including water, food, medicine, and diapers, to the hospital.

The attack on Okhmatdyt hospital is part of a broader pattern of violence against medical facilities in Ukraine. According to the World Health Organization, there have been over 1,600 instances of heavy weapons attacks on medical facilities since the start of the full-scale invasion, resulting in 141 deaths.

International outcry has been swift, with European nations and organizations like UNICEF condemning the attacks. France called for the strike to be added to the list of war crimes for which Russia will be held accountable. The UK’s Prime Minister Keir Starmer labeled the attack as “the most depraved of actions.”

As Ukraine continues to grapple with the aftermath of the missile strikes, the international community is mobilizing to provide support and hold Russia accountable for its actions. The devastation at Okhmatdyt hospital underscores the brutal reality of the conflict and the urgent need for increased protection and humanitarian aid for the affected populations.
