Manhunt underway in North Carolina for convicted murderer who escaped during hospital transfer, says sheriff. Get the latest updates on the search.
A manhunt is underway for Ramone Jamarr Alston, a
convicted murderer who escaped from custody while being transported to UNC
Gastroenterology in Hillsborough for medical care.
Alston, 30, managed to free himself from his leg
restraints and flee into a wooded area after the vehicle door was opened. He
was last seen wearing a gray T-shirt, brown pants, white New Balance shoes, and
handcuffs connected to a belly chain with a black box.
Orange County Sheriff’s Office has launched a
search and is offering a $25,000 reward for information leading to his capture.
The sheriff believes Alston may have had help in his escape and emphasized the
importance of the manhunt.
Two armed corrections officers were accompanying
Alston but were unable to apprehend him after he bolted from the vehicle.
Sheriff Charles Blackwood noted that while protocols were followed, Alston’s
quick escape posed significant challenges for law enforcement.
Residents in the area are advised to secure their
homes and report any suspicious activity. Alston, who was serving a life
sentence for the 2015 murder of 1-year-old Maleah Williams, poses a serious
threat, and authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward.
