Marine tragically killed in training accident near Camp Lejeune, just days after promotion. Identity confirmed as investigation unfolds.
Military officials have released the identity of the Marine from North
Carolina who tragically lost his life in a training accident near Camp Lejeune,
just days after achieving the rank of sergeant.
Sgt. Colin Arslanbas, 23, was fatally injured during the accident, which
occurred shortly after 11 p.m. in Carteret County, near Marine Corps base Camp
Lejeune.
Col. Todd Mahar, commanding officer of the 24th Marine Expeditionary
Unit (MEU), expressed profound sorrow over the loss, stating, "Words
cannot convey our sorrow for the tragic loss of one of our MEU family
members."
Originally from O'Fallon, MO, Arslanbas enlisted in the Marine Corps on
March 26, 2020. He had recently earned the rank of sergeant on April 1, just
days before the accident occurred.
Arslanbas served as a Reconnaissance Marine with the Maritime Special
Purpose Forces within the 24th MEU. His commendations include the Marine Corps
Good Conduct Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and National Defense
Service Medal.
The circumstances surrounding the accident remain under investigation,
and no further details have been released by officials.
"The 24th MEU family mourns the loss of an outstanding Marine and
leader. We offer our deepest condolences and unwavering support to his family
during this most difficult time," added Col. Mahar.
