BERLIN TOWNSHIP, Mich. — Authorities are continuing their investigation
into a tragic incident that claimed the lives of two young siblings at a
birthday celebration over the weekend, as the Monroe County prosecutor, Jeff
Yorkey, stated that more time is needed before charges can be filed.
“We anticipate reaching a charging decision by Tuesday,” Yorkey
announced in a brief statement.
Acknowledging the public's patience, Yorkey emphasized the importance of
thoroughness in the investigative process. "Having all pertinent
information at our disposal is crucial in making such a significant
decision," he added.
The devastating incident occurred when a 66-year-old woman reportedly
drove into the Swan Creek Boat Club in Berlin Township, resulting in the tragic
deaths of 8-year-old Alanah Phillips and her 5-year-old brother, Zayn Phillips.
The birthday party, attended by both children and adults, was held Saturday,
approximately 30 miles (48 kilometers) south of Detroit.
In addition to the loss of the young siblings, their mother and another
sibling were among the nine individuals injured and transported to hospitals,
according to the Flat Rock school district and a crowdfunding page established
to assist the family.
As of Monday, the sheriff's office reported that five people remained in
critical or serious condition, underscoring the severity of the tragedy and the
ongoing efforts to gather information to bring about justice for the victims
and their loved ones.
