Prince Harry and Meghan Visit Lagos, Nigeria to Promote Mental Health and Youth Empowerment
LAGOS,
Nigeria — Nigeria's vibrant fashion and rich cultural heritage took center
stage on Sunday as Prince Harry and Meghan arrived in Lagos, the country's
bustling metropolis, as part of their three-day visit aimed at promoting mental
health awareness among soldiers and empowering young people.
Invited
by Nigeria's military, the royal couple were greeted with lively traditional
dances, showcasing the country's diverse cultural tapestry, right from their
arrival at Lagos airport. A troupe of dancers mesmerized the couple with their
acrobatic performances, evoking applause and smiles. Notably, a young dancer,
barely five years old, exchanged salutes with Prince Harry from atop sturdy
shoulders, adding a touch of innocence and joy to the occasion.
Meghan,
elegantly dressed in a white top, complemented her attire with the traditional Nigerian
aso oke, a intricately patterned handwoven fabric typically worn around the
waist for special occasions. This garment was bestowed upon her as a gift by a
group of local women the previous day.
The
royal couple's itinerary included a visit to a local charity organization,
Giants of Africa, which utilizes basketball as a tool for youth empowerment.
Here, they were treated to yet another display of traditional dances before
announcing a partnership between the organization and their Archewell Foundation.
Expressing
admiration for the work of Giants of Africa, Prince Harry remarked, "What
you guys are doing here at Giants of Africa is truly amazing. The power of
sport can change lives. It brings people together and creates community, and
there are no barriers, which is the most important thing."
The
visit to Lagos provided Prince Harry and Meghan with an opportunity to immerse
themselves in Nigeria's vibrant culture, while also championing causes close to
their hearts, such as mental health awareness and youth empowerment.
