A train
struck a family on a bridge in Fremont, Ohio, killing three and critically
injuring a toddler.
Fremont,
Ohio — A
tragic accident occurred in Fremont over the weekend when a train struck four
pedestrians on a railroad bridge, killing two adults and a child, and
critically injuring a toddler. The victims, part of a large family visiting
from Indiana, were on a fishing trip when the incident occurred.
The
deceased have been identified as Ram Masan, 58; O Ny Zar, 38; and Intisar Mi,
5, all from Fort Wayne, Indiana. A 14-month-old child remains in critical
condition and has been transferred from a hospital in Toledo to a specialized
facility in Columbus for further treatment.
Emergency
services responded late Sunday night after the train hit the group on the Miles
Newton Bridge, which spans the Sandusky River in Fremont. The body of the
5-year-old child was recovered from the river Monday afternoon following an
intensive search involving two dive teams and multiple law enforcement
agencies.
According
to Fremont Mayor Danny Sanchez, the family had traveled to the area for a
fishing outing. Authorities have not yet determined how the group ended up on
the bridge at the time of the train’s arrival.
The Ohio
State Highway Patrol, along with deputies from Ottawa and Sandusky counties,
were involved in the operation, supported by local fire and EMS units. Norfolk
Southern Railway, the operator of the train, issued a statement expressing
condolences and confirming full cooperation with the investigation.
Mayor
Sanchez called it a “very, very unfortunate tragedy” that has deeply affected
the community. The bridge was briefly closed during the investigation but has
since reopened.
Authorities
continue to investigate how the accident occurred and whether other family
members were nearby or involved.
