ST. LOUIS (AP) — Severe storms wreaked havoc across parts of the middle U.S. on Tuesday, spawning tornadoes in Kansas and Iowa and causing significant damage to properties and infrastructure.

 

In northeastern Kansas, an EF-1 tornado struck near the town of Richland shortly after 6 a.m., according to the National Weather Service.

With wind speeds reaching up to 100 mph (161 kph), the tornado remained on the ground for approximately 20 minutes, causing damage to buildings and trees in the neighboring town of Overbrook. Two individuals sustained injuries when their RV overturned during the tornado, although details about the extent of their injuries were not immediately available.

 

Meanwhile, central Iowa also experienced the wrath of severe weather as a tornado tore through a rural area of Dallas County, demolishing a barn and damaging other structures. Additionally, reports of ping pong ball-sized hail in Bloomfield raised concerns about potential property damage.

 

The National Weather Service issued warnings for severe weather across the central U.S., with thunderstorms anticipated in regions of Kansas, Missouri, Iowa, and northwestern Illinois. These storms posed risks of large hail and damaging winds, heightening concerns for residents and authorities alike.

 

Amid the tumultuous weather conditions, a Chicago-bound American Eagle Flight 3661 was forced to return to Kansas City International Airport shortly after takeoff due to a possible lightning strike. Passengers were accommodated on alternative flights as maintenance crews inspected the aircraft for any damages.

 

In western Missouri, near Smithville Lake, a powerful storm toppled a camper and ripped the roof off a building, according to reports from the Clay County Sheriff’s Department. Additionally, communities surrounding Kansas City reported incidents of downed trees and power lines, exacerbating the impact of the severe weather system.

 

As cleanup efforts begin and communities assess the extent of the damage, authorities remain vigilant, emphasizing the importance of preparedness and safety in the face of severe weather events.
