Chicago police charge Robert Romo, 57, with double murder and attempted
murder in Gage Park incidents that left two dead and one injured.
CHICAGO — A Chicago man has been charged with multiple felonies,
including two counts of first-degree murder, in connection with a violent
incident in Gage Park over the weekend that left two people dead and another
injured.
According to Chicago police, 57-year-old Robert Romo has been charged
with two counts of first-degree murder, one count of attempted first-degree
murder, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, and aggravated unlawful
possession of a weapon. Authorities allege that Romo killed his own brother,
63-year-old Richard Romo, along with Richard’s girlfriend, 64-year-old Rita
Chavez, before attacking a third victim.
Timeline of the Crime
The events unfolded around 10 p.m. on Sunday in the 5300 block of South
Kedzie Avenue. Police were first alerted to the area after receiving reports of
a shooting. Upon arrival, officers found the back door of an apartment building
open. Upon entering, they discovered the lifeless bodies of Richard Romo and
Rita Chavez.
Richard Romo had suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the head, while Chavez
had multiple injuries, later confirmed as stab wounds. The family confirmed to
WGN-TV that Robert and Richard Romo were brothers.
Second Incident at Local Bar
Shortly after the double homicide, authorities believe Romo proceeded to
Just One More Sports Bar, located next door to the crime scene. Surveillance
footage and witness accounts indicate that Romo, armed with a pistol and a
knife, followed another man inside the bar.
Once inside, he allegedly targeted a 44-year-old woman, attacking her
with a knife. The victim sustained multiple lacerations and was transported to
a local hospital, where she was reported to be in good condition.
Arrest and Legal Proceedings
Romo was taken into custody at the scene of the bar attack, and a
firearm was recovered. Scheduled for a detention hearing on Wednesday morning,
he was unable to appear due to hospitalization. The hearing has been
rescheduled for Monday.
Authorities have not released a motive for the violent attacks, and the
investigation remains ongoing. Family members speculate that Robert Romo may
have suffered a psychological break before carrying out the attacks.
