Jazz
Chisholm Jr. is appealing a one-game suspension after his ejection and social
media tirade over a strike call during Yankees vs. Rays.
TAMPA,
Fla. – New York Yankees infielder Jazz Chisholm Jr. is appealing a one-game
suspension issued by Major League Baseball after his ejection from Thursday
night’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays and a subsequent outburst on social
media.
The
27-year-old was tossed in the seventh inning after disputing a called third
strike by home plate umpire John Bacon. The call followed a tense at-bat that
saw a 3-2 pitch from Mason Montgomery ruled a strike, despite appearing low in
the zone. Chisholm had previously been granted a reprieve on the pitch before
that — a borderline 99-mph fastball called ball three.
Frustrated
by the strikeout, Chisholm exchanged heated words with Bacon and was ejected.
Moments later, he posted on X (formerly Twitter):
“Not even
f–king close!!!!!”
The post
was deleted before the game ended but had already drawn the league’s attention.
MLB ruled the post a violation of league policy, both for being sent during a
live game and for potentially denigrating a major league umpire.
Chisholm
acknowledged his mistake in a post-game interview, saying,
“I feel
like a lot of stuff hasn’t been going my way, but that doesn’t give me the
excuse to go out there and act like that… I get emotional about the game,
especially when I think I’m right.”
Yankees
manager Aaron Boone attempted to defuse the situation before Chisholm’s
ejection but was unable to get to him in time.
This
marks Chisholm’s fifth career ejection, but his first since joining the
Yankees. The infielder is allowed to play while his appeal is pending and was
in the lineup for Friday’s game at Steinbrenner Field.
