WNBA
launches investigation into racial slur allegations involving Angel Reese
during game against Indiana Fever.
Indianapolis,
United States — The WNBA has launched an investigation following reports that
Chicago Sky forward Angel Reese was subjected to racial slurs during her team’s
game against the Indiana Fever on Saturday.
In a
statement, the league emphasized its zero-tolerance policy toward
discrimination. “The WNBA strongly condemns racism, hate, and discrimination in
all forms – they have no place in our league or in society,” the statement read.
The league confirmed it is reviewing the situation to determine what occurred.
The
Indiana Fever organization also addressed the allegations, stating they are
working with the league to investigate possible inappropriate behavior from
fans. Mel Raines, CEO of Pacers Sports & Entertainment, which owns the
Fever, reiterated the franchise’s commitment to ensuring a safe environment for
all players.
The
incident allegedly took place during a tense third quarter, where Reese was
fouled hard by Indiana rookie star Caitlin Clark, leading to an on-court
confrontation. Clark’s foul was upgraded to a flagrant 1, and both Reese and
Fever forward Aliyah Boston were issued technical fouls.
While
both players downplayed the confrontation postgame, it remains unclear whether
the racial slurs were connected to the altercation.
Chicago
Sky CEO Adam Fox expressed full support for the WNBA’s investigation and
emphasized the team’s dedication to protecting its players. “We will do
everything in our power to ensure a safe environment for our athletes,” he
said.
The
Women’s National Basketball Players Association also weighed in, calling the
reported behavior unacceptable and urging the WNBA to take swift action under
its “No Space for Hate” initiative.
The WNBA
has recently expanded efforts to combat hate speech both online and in arenas.
The league’s new campaign includes increased security measures, technology to
flag abusive language, and enhanced mental health resources for players.
Reese and
Clark, both stars from the 2023 NCAA championship, have played down suggestions
of a rivalry, but their matchups continue to draw significant attention. They
are scheduled to face each other four more times this season.
