California homeowner shoots home invasion suspect; another fatality reported in targeted heist, say police. Updates to follow
In an affluent neighborhood in Southern California's Newport Beach, a
homeowner took decisive action Tuesday morning, shooting a suspected home
intruder inside a gated residence, according to police reports.
Authorities described the incident as a targeted attack involving a
prior connection between the suspects and the victims, indicating a
premeditated nature to the crime.
The Newport Beach Police Department swiftly responded to the scene at
Pelican Hill Road and Newport Coast Drive following a 911 call around 4:45
a.m., reporting that one of the suspects had been shot inside the home.
Upon arrival, officers discovered one suspect with gunshot wounds lying
in the street, armed with a handgun. The injured suspect was promptly
transported to a hospital for medical attention, though specific details
regarding their condition were not disclosed.
Simultaneously, investigators located a second suspect nearby, concealed
in bushes, with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Tragically, the
second suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.
Fortunately, the four individuals present inside the targeted home
during the invasion emerged unscathed, sparing them from harm.
Newport Beach Mayor Will O'Neill issued a stern warning to potential
criminals in a video statement, asserting the city's commitment to self-defense
against unlawful intrusions. The incident serves as a reminder of the
