The FBI has initiated a criminal investigation into the tragic collapse of Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge. 

Focusing on the circumstances leading up to the incident and whether federal laws were adhered to, according to a source familiar with the matter who spoke on condition of anonymity to The Associated Press.

 

Agents from the FBI conducted law enforcement activity aboard the cargo ship Dali on Monday as part of the ongoing investigation. While the agency declined to provide further details, Mayor Brandon Scott announced a partnership with two law firms to pursue legal action against those responsible for the collapse and to mitigate the impact on Baltimore residents.

 

The collapse occurred on March 26 when the Dali, laden with cargo en route to Sri Lanka, struck one of the bridge's supports, resulting in the span collapsing into the Patapsco River and claiming the lives of six roadwork crew members.

 

Concerns have been raised about the Dali's apparent electrical issues prior to departure from Baltimore's port. Alarms from the ship's refrigerated containers indicated inconsistent power supply while docked, prompting inquiries into whether these issues were addressed before the voyage.

 

Officials from the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the incident, including the ship's electrical system and any power issues experienced before the crash.

 

Mayor Scott emphasized the city's commitment to holding all accountable parties responsible for the tragedy, including the ship's owner, charterer, and manufacturer. With various government agencies conducting investigations, swift action is deemed necessary to safeguard the city's interests.

 

The Dali, managed by Synergy Marine Group and owned by Grace Ocean Private Ltd., with Maersk as the charterer, is at the center of the investigation. The development unfolds amidst heightened concerns about the safety of U.S. bridges following recent incidents, underscoring the urgency of addressing infrastructure integrity nationwide.
