Serena Williams, the 23-time grand slam champion, has transitioned into
a prolific investor, diversifying her portfolio beyond tennis.
With stakes in soccer club Angel City FC and golf franchise Los Angeles
Golf Club (LAGC), among other ventures, Williams is exploring opportunities
both inside and outside the sporting world.
In a conversation with CNN's Amanda Davies, Williams expressed her keen
interest in adding a WNBA team to her investment portfolio. She noted the
momentum in women's basketball following a successful NCAA tournament and
emphasized her enthusiasm for women's sports as an investment opportunity.
Williams' investment company, Serena Ventures, has already backed 66
startups, including 16 unicorns valued at over $1 billion each. Notably, 78% of
the startups supported by Serena Ventures were founded by women and people of
color, underscoring Williams' commitment to championing traditionally
underrepresented entrepreneurs.
As an experienced investor, Williams views women's sports as a safe and
exciting investment. She highlighted the growing viewership of women's sports,
citing examples like the NCAA women's basketball tournament, which attracted
significant attention.
Moreover, Williams has extended her investment ethos to her six-year-old
daughter Olympia, making her a part owner of Angel City FC and LAGC. Reflecting
on her own upbringing, Williams emphasized the importance of teaching her
daughter about ownership and entrepreneurship from a young age.
By involving Olympia in investment opportunities, Williams aims to
instill a strong work ethic and entrepreneurial mindset in her daughter,
ensuring she understands the value of ownership and the need to work for
success. Overall, Williams' approach to investing reflects her belief in the
potential of women's sports and her commitment to empowering future
generations.
