On a demanding third day at Augusta National, Tiger Woods endured his
worst-ever performance at the Masters, effectively eliminating himself from
contention, while Scottie Scheffler maintained a slim one-shot lead heading
into the final round in pursuit of his second green jacket.
Despite milder weather conditions compared to Saturday's stormy winds,
Augusta's challenging course remained formidable. Among the leaders, only
Collin Morikawa managed to card a score under 70, finishing with a 69 to secure
second place at six under, trailing Scheffler by one shot.
Woods struggled to a disappointing 10-over par 82 for the round,
following his record-breaking 24th consecutive cut made at the Masters with a
grueling 23-hole effort on Friday. Still grappling with the aftermath of leg
injuries sustained in a car crash last year, Woods cited physical fatigue from
Friday's play, lamenting his poor ball-striking and putting performance.
Despite his struggles, the 15-time major champion affirmed his readiness
for the final round, determined to bounce back from his worst-ever Masters
showing.
As the tournament approaches its climactic finale, the leaderboard
promises an enthralling conclusion, with five players separated by just four
shots. Even Scheffler, the world No. 1, faced challenges, including a double
bogey on the 10th hole followed by a bogey on the 11th, only to recover with an
eagle on the 13th.
Max Homa, sharing the lead at the start of the day, slipped to third
after failing to register a birdie, while Bryson DeChambeau's three-over 75
dropped him to fifth place.
Amidst the intense competition, Morikawa's steady performance and
Masters rookie Ludvig Åberg's impressive showing add further intrigue to the
final round. Åberg, just three shots behind the leader, aims to become the
first rookie to win since 1979.
The final round commences at 9:15 a.m. ET on Sunday, with Scheffler and
Morikawa teeing off in the last pairing at 2:35 p.m. ET.
