Ukrainian-born congresswoman opposes aid to Ukraine.
Rep. Victoria
Spartz Bucks Trend, Votes Against Additional Support for Ukraine
*SHERIDAN, Ind. — Representative Victoria Spartz, the sole Ukrainian-born member of
Congress, has long been seen as a natural ally for her homeland in its conflict
with Russia. However, when faced with a $61 billion aid package to bolster
Ukraine’s war effort, Spartz voted against it.
Spartz’s decision
reflects her stance on fiscal responsibility and the need for greater oversight
of U.S. funds. She has voiced concerns about providing unchecked financial
support to Ukraine and has instead emphasized the importance of prioritizing
U.S. border security.
In a recent
interview, Spartz expressed dismay at the notion that her heritage should
dictate her stance on Ukrainian aid, stressing her primary responsibility as
the protection of American citizens.
The aid package,
which included assistance for other global hot spots such as Israel and Taiwan,
was passed by the House on April 20, cleared the Senate on Tuesday, and was
swiftly signed into law by President Joe Biden on Wednesday.
Spartz’s position
has resonated with conservative House Republicans and voters in her deeply
conservative central Indiana district. As she faces a tough reelection battle
in the upcoming GOP primary on May 7, her stance on Ukrainian aid has become a
focal point of debate.
The primary
contenders in the 5th district have largely echoed Spartz’s emphasis on border
security over foreign aid, reflecting the sentiments of their constituents in
the conservative stronghold.
Former Indiana
state representative and political commentator Mike Murphy highlighted the
prevailing concern among Republican voters about border security, which has
overshadowed discussions on foreign aid.
State Rep. Chuck
Goodrich, one of Spartz’s primary challengers, has been particularly vocal in
criticizing her initial support for Ukraine, framing it as prioritizing foreign
interests over domestic security.
Despite facing
formidable competition, Spartz maintains certain advantages, including her
incumbency status. However, she lags behind her primary opponent, Chuck
Goodrich, in campaign funds, with Goodrich having injected significant personal
resources into his campaign.
The absence of an
endorsement from former President Donald Trump has added a layer of uncertainty
to the race, particularly given his mixed views on aid to Ukraine.
As the primary
election draws near, Spartz continues to emphasize her journey from Ukraine to
Congress and her commitment to protecting American values. While she
acknowledges the bravery of those fighting for freedom in Ukraine, she has also
criticized the Ukrainian government, citing concerns about corruption.
In her
interactions with voters, Spartz has refrained from directly addressing the
conflict in Ukraine, choosing instead to focus on broader themes of party
allegiance and the dangers of socialist ideologies, drawing on her experiences
growing up in the Soviet Union.
Despite the
challenges she faces in her reelection bid, Spartz remains a prominent figure
in Indiana politics, navigating the complexities of representing her
constituents while staying true to her principles.
