Paul Pelosi hammer attacker David DePape sentenced to 30 years in prison. Maximum penalty underscores severity of assault.
David DePape, convicted for the brutal
hammer attack on Paul Pelosi, received a 30-year prison sentence.
This attack, occurring on October 28,
2022, severely injured Paul Pelosi, leading to lasting physical and emotional
trauma. During sentencing, DePape showed no reaction as the judge read the
decision. The court handed down the maximum sentence for one count and 20 years
for a second, to be served concurrently. U.S. Attorney Ismail Ramsey emphasized
the sentence's role in preventing future politically motivated violence.
Christine Pelosi, the couple's daughter,
read a victim impact statement in court. Nancy Pelosi was in Washington, D.C.,
and did not attend, but released a statement expressing pride in her husband's
courage and gratitude for the public's support during his recovery.
Paul Pelosi described the ongoing impact
of his injuries, including daily headaches, vertigo, sensitivity to light and
noise, and nerve damage in his hand, making basic tasks challenging. Nancy
Pelosi's statement underscored the attack's devastation on their family and
called for a long sentence as both punishment and deterrence.
DePape had broken into the Pelosi home
intending to confront Nancy Pelosi, echoing threats from the January 6 Capitol
attack. He bludgeoned Paul Pelosi after police arrived. His defense attributed
his actions to extreme political beliefs and conspiracy theories.
DePape also faces state charges, with
jury selection for that trial starting soon. This federal sentence ensures
DePape will not be able to commit further acts of violence within the political
sphere.
