Israeli strike on Gaza school kills 17, mostly women and children. Gaza's health system on the verge of collapse
Israeli
Strike Kills 17 in Gaza School Shelter, Majority Women and Children
Deir
al-Balah, Gaza Strip - An Israeli airstrike on a school sheltering displaced
civilians in the Nuseirat refugee camp, located in central Gaza, resulted in
the deaths of at least 17 people on Thursday, according to Palestinian medical
officials. Among the victims were 13 children and three women, with 42 more
people injured, many critically. Awda Hospital, where the casualties were
treated, confirmed these numbers.
The
Israeli military stated that the strike targeted a Hamas command center inside
the school, but did not provide evidence to support the claim. Israel has
previously conducted strikes on schools and other civilian shelters in Gaza,
often justifying them by citing Hamas militants hiding among civilians.
Meanwhile,
health workers in Gaza, particularly in the northern regions, are warning of an
imminent humanitarian catastrophe. Hospitals are severely short of medical
supplies, with many operating under constant threat of bombardment. The health
system in Gaza is collapsing under the strain of ongoing air and ground
assaults, leaving medical staff struggling to save lives.
As
the conflict rages on, international calls for a ceasefire and increased
humanitarian aid are growing. The United States has announced an additional
$135 million in aid, aiming to alleviate some of the suffering in Gaza.
However, with no signs of peace talks advancing, the region remains embroiled
in deadly violence.
