Cape Town, South Africa
Cape
Town, South Africa – A husband rushing his pregnant wife to the
hospital was brutally stabbed to death by a gang of thugs, triggering an early
labor that forced his wife to give birth beside him.
Talent
Gono, 34, and his wife, Lilian, 33, were ambushed outside their home in the Joe
Slovo township. The gang of eight attacked while Talent was loading his wife's
hospital bag into an Uber, beating him to the ground and stabbing him multiple
times in the chest and head.
The
horrifying scene caused Lilian’s water to break. Alone in the street, with
local residents too fearful to intervene, she delivered a baby girl next to her
dying husband.
Talent, a
welder, had been saving for three years to move his family back to Zimbabwe in
April for a fresh start. UK wildlife artist Carol Cox had even sold a painting
to help him buy welding equipment for his new business.
Lilian,
now widowed, is left to care for their five-year-old daughter, Mia, and her
newborn daughter, also named Talent. She works as a maid, and her employer,
Jeannie Ross, has launched a fundraising campaign to assist with funeral costs
and living expenses.
Family
friend Toni Tresadern, who runs a charity for children in need, described the
attack as "utterly appalling." According to Tresadern, the gang took
only a phone and a baby bag before fleeing while laughing.
South
African police are investigating the murder and are appealing for any
information that could lead to the arrest of the attackers.
