Gov. Whitmer dismisses debate over Taylor Swift and Brittany Mahomes' political views: 'We shouldn't give a damn

Gretchen Whitmer Dismisses Swift-Mahomes Controversy: ‘We Shouldn’t Give a
Damn’
Michigan Governor
Gretchen Whitmer recently entered the national discourse on the highly
publicized friendship between pop icon Taylor Swift and Brittany Mahomes, the
wife of NFL star Patrick Mahomes. In a Bravo interview on Tuesday, Whitmer was
asked if she believed that people should care about potential political
differences between Swift, who has publicly endorsed Vice President Kamala
Harris, and Mahomes, who has been linked to supporting former President Donald
Trump.
Whitmer’s response was
sharp and succinct. "We do care about Taylor Swift and, no, we shouldn't
give a damn," the governor said, implying that political affiliations
should not dictate friendships or personal relationships.
While Whitmer’s
response was brief, the public has shown a keen interest in the developing
story. Swift and Mahomes became fast friends during the 2023 NFL season,
frequently seen together at Kansas City Chiefs games. Swift, who has been
romantically linked to Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, often shared a VIP suite with
Brittany Mahomes as they cheered on their respective partners. The camaraderie
between the two women was evident, and their public appearances drew
significant media attention.
However, this year,
things have changed. Swift’s recent endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris
in the wake of a political debate on September 10 has caused waves among both
fans and political commentators. The endorsement stood in contrast to Mahomes’
perceived support for Trump, which has been a point of social media controversy
since she liked one of Trump’s Instagram posts outlining his 2024 policy
platform in August.
This social media
activity ignited speculation that Mahomes leans toward conservative politics,
while Swift has long been vocal about her progressive views. Swift’s fanbase,
known for its political engagement, quickly noticed Mahomes’ Instagram
activity, further fueling the controversy. In response to the backlash, Mahomes
posted cryptic messages on her Instagram stories, emphasizing kindness and
tolerance.
"I mean honestly,
to be a hater as an adult, you have to have some deep-rooted issues you refuse
to heal from childhood," Mahomes wrote. She followed this up with another
story that read, "Contrary to the tone of the world today….you can disagree
with someone, and still love them. You can have differing views, and still be
kind."
Despite the social
media storm, Swift and Mahomes have not made any public comments directly
addressing their political views or friendship. However, it has not gone
unnoticed that in recent Chiefs games, Swift and Mahomes have not sat together
as they did last year. Fans observed that in Week 1 and Week 2 of the current
NFL season, Swift was absent from Mahomes’ suite, prompting questions about
whether politics may have strained their once highly publicized bond.
Former President Trump
has also taken the opportunity to comment on the situation. During a "Fox
& Friends" appearance, he mentioned that he liked "Mrs. Mahomes
much better" than Swift, doubling down on his disdain for the pop star,
whom he once declared on Truth Social, "I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT!" Trump’s
comments added fuel to the fire, but they have not sparked any further public
exchanges between Swift and Mahomes.
Whitmer’s position on
the matter reflects a broader sentiment that friendships, especially in the
public eye, should not be judged or defined by political alignments. Her
message was clear: the personal relationships of celebrities shouldn’t be the
concern of the public.
Whether or not the
political divide between Swift and Mahomes will impact their friendship remains
to be seen. But for now, Whitmer believes it is an issue not worth worrying
about.
